A New Voice in Bengali Poetry: ‘Udbastur Foyara’ by Soumik Chatterjee

Dubela:  The 48th Edition of the Kolkata Book Fair, which started on January 28 has so far witnessed the release of many books written by debutant writers. One such book is ‘Udbastur Foyara’ written by Mr. Soumik Chatterjee (Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, THK Jain College).

The book, published by Khowabnama, is a well-strung garland of fifty-one terse yet evocative Bengali poems which capture the varied nuances of social reality and the complexities of human emotion seen through the lens of the poet’s deeply introspective reflections on them.

The book was formally released on February 5 in the august presence of eminent author, translator, cultural commentator and former Professor of Film Studies, Prof. Sanjoy Mukhopadhyay, veteran media academic, author, poet and Rabindra Sangeet artist, Dr. Abir Chattopadhyay and Dr. Mausumi Singh Sengupta, Honorable Principal of THK Jain College.

During the book release, Prof. Mukhopadhyay highlighted the special place held by poetry among the Bengali intelligentsia and congratulated the author on taking the bold plunge into the world of poetry. The other dignitaries too appreciated the efforts of the author in attempting to stimulate nostalgia, introspection and optimism among Bengali poetry lovers through his poems. The book release was followed by an interactive discussion with the guests and book-signing session by the author.

About the Author:

Mr. Soumik Chatterjee is an Assistant Professor and the Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tara Devi Harakh Chand Kankaria Jain College. With a background in Music and Literature, he was formerly the lead vocalist of the Bengali band, Deenga. ‘Udbastur Foyara’ marks his first full-length publication, showcasing his distinctive voice and passion for Bengali poetry. The book was officially released on February 5, 2025 at the Kolkata International Book Fair, 2025.
