A Shameful Night: Teachers Assaulted for Demanding Justice

wb Teachers Assaulted for Demanding Justice

Dubela, Kankana Maity:  At Bikash Bhavan, hundreds of teachers gathered in peaceful protest, hoping to break the silence surrounding their uncertain futures. They came not with threats, but with requests — for a dialogue, a meeting with the Chief Minister, a chance to be heard. But what awaited them was not a conversation. As evening turned to night, the government’s response came not in words, but in sirens and boots. Instead of dialogue, they were met with force.

Under the cover of darkness, a heavy police presence stormed the area. The Rapid Action Force arrived, not to protect, but to intimidate. Then began the violence — batons flew, bodies fell. Teachers — our educators, our mentors — were left bleeding on the pavement. Their clothes were torn, their dignity bruised. No crime had been committed, yet they were punished.

This is not just an attack on teachers. This is an attack on the very people who shape the future of this state. It stains the conscience of a leadership that once promised to stand beside them. The Chief Minister has often spoken of supporting teachers, but last night’s actions speak louder than any words. To protect her government from allegations of corruption, she allowed innocent educators to be crushed. The CPI(ML) denounces these barbaric police crackdown in the strongest terms.

Yet in the face of violence, the teachers stood their ground. Even after facing brutal assault, they did not retreat. Their fight — for security, dignity, and fairness — is far from over. And it will not be in vain.
