India Suspends 1960 Indus Water Treaty Amid Pahalgam Terror Attack

Dubela, Riddhi Biswas: India has suspended the 1960 Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan following the terror attack in Pahalgam by Pakistan-based terrorists. The government has decided to stop the flow of Indus River water to Pakistan after suspending the treaty. The Pakistani government strongly rejected this suspension, warning that any action to stop the water flow to Pakistan would be seen as an “act of war.”
The treaty was originally signed to build a peaceful relationship and promote reconciliation between India and Pakistan. However, despite several talks over the years, India has faced cross-border terrorism. The recent attacks in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir were a brutal act carried out by Pakistan-based terrorists.
However, the treaty does not include any clause allowing either side to suspend it unilaterally. This move may lead to further diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
