Dubela, Satrajit Das: As Manipur approaches the second anniversary of the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, the state has significantly heightened security across key districts. Authorities have imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in several areas, including Imphal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Morch, restricting public gatherings to prevent potential unrest. Police have intensified frisking and vehicle checks and central forces have been deployed at sensitive locations such as Kangla Gate to maintain order.
The ethnic clashes, which began over the Metro community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status, resulted in over 250 deaths and displaced approximately 60,000 people, many of whom remain in relief camps. The state remains divided along ethnic lines, with Meiteis and Kuki-Zo tribals unable to enter each other’s areas. In anticipation of the anniversary, the Kuki Students Organization and Zomi Students Federation have called for a shutdown on May 3 in Kuki-dominated regions and encouraged participation in observance events organized by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum in Churachandpur.
