Trump’s Tariffs Pressurize Chinese Giants to Accept India’s Trade Terms

Dubela, Amritangshu Paul:

Donald Trump’s return to the White House marks the comeback of one of his favorite economic tools—tariffs. In a bold move targeting Beijing, Trump has imposed tariffs on nearly all Chinese imports, with some as high as 245%. Only a few politically sensitive goods, such as smartphones and medicines, have been spared.

Trump made his stance clear: “We’re going to have a deal with China. And if we don’t, we’re going to have a deal anyway, because we will set our own target, and that’s going to be it.”

China has not stayed silent. It responded with tariffs of its own—up to 125% on U.S. goods. “China does not want to fight, but it is not afraid to fight,” said Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry. Meanwhile, Ma Xiaoxiao, the deputy consul in New York, blamed the U.S. for its “unreasonable demands” and vowed that China “will fight to the end… for world order and justice.”
