After Rohit, Who Is Next for the Throne

Dubela, Anuja Chakraborty (Edited by Ankesh Roy): India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma is expected to step down soon. The big question now is: who will be next in line? As the team looks to start a fresh cycle in the World Test Championship, several strong contenders are vying for the leadership role. Jasprit Bumrah is arguably one of the frontrunners. His calm mindset and smart decision-making during India’s win in Perth—when he temporarily captained the side—stood out. However, injury concerns have led experts to suggest he should focus primarily on bowling.

Shubman Gill is another obvious candidate. He has been appointed IPL captain and serves as vice-captain in white-ball formats. While a talented player, his overseas Test performances are yet to reach the expected level, which could pose challenges for his elevation. Yashasvi Jaiswal is also being considered. His aggressive style brings energy to the team, but it remains to be seen if he has the temperament and skills needed for leadership.

If Rishabh Pant were not recovering from injury and managing a heavy workload along with numerous responsibilities, he might be the best option. Known for his fearless, game-changing style, Pant’s leadership qualities have been widely acknowledged. Choosing Rohit Sharma’s successor will not be easy. The BCCI must find someone who can lead the team with both poise and precision. The captaincy seat is wide open.
